Urea or Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is a by-product of protein metabolism. This test is usually ordered as a part of other blood tests to help diagnose a number of conditions. Your doctor will order this test if there is a possibility that you have kidney damage; if your kidney function needs evaluation; to check effectiveness of dialysis if you have long standing kidney disease.
